Proper behavior is an important part of being a good dog. And providing that training for your pup is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. A solid foundation in behavior training gives dogs the support they need to be a good pet and a good citizen. At Elmhurst Animal Care Center, we are experts in dog obedience and behavior training, and can offer your dog the skills he or she needs for success at home and on the go.

The Importance of Pet Behavior Training for You

Proper training is about more than good manners. While manners are certainly important, the key to your dog’s success in life is understanding his or her place in your family’s pack. By nature, dogs are pack animals and crave an established hierarchy to guide their behavior in society. Behavior training creates that understanding of where he or she fits in the pack, and establishes you as the pack alpha, along with your family and friends place as your “seconds in command.”

Once your dog recognizes that you are the top dog, he or she will, by nature, want to please you and much of his or her natural “good” behavior will fall into place from that understanding.

The Importance of Pet Behavior Training for Your Dog

When done correctly, behavior training can enable your dog to be well mannered and confident in his or her daily life. A solid foundation in training can also create a deeper bond of mutual trust between you, which will allow your dog greater opportunities, such as participating in social gatherings or being off-leash when the time is right.

Training also offers your pet the chance to learn much-needed life skills, such as walking on-leash (it’s not as natural as you might think), house training, obeying commands, and overall socialization skills.

Perhaps most importantly, training can also help to keep your pet safe. The socialization with other dogs and humans that training provides can help your dog to keep its cool in stressful situations, reducing the chances for aggressive behavior. Likewise, a dog that is trained to “stop” on command is less likely to run into traffic chasing a well-deserving squirrel or poorly thrown tennis ball.
